Photography Course

Photographic Course – Go to Whoa – with Scott Younger
For People at any Level of Photography
The purpose of this course is to learn how to optimise your digital file (or negative), to edit such using a Photographic Software Package and to make two Exhibition level prints of the photos you have taken with me by the end of the course. To give you confidence technically and artistically.

We begin with visiting a place you nominate to take photographs of interest to you and ends with 2 Exhibition Standard prints (Urban, Landscape, People, Sport etc). I totally concentrate throughout the process on The Print which is Tangible and Organic. Alternatively, there might be aspects of the course I offer below which you wish to concentrate on. Do call me to discuss.

I am very happy to work with anyone regardless of where they consider their level to be. In considering whether to contact me never consider your level is too basic. Absolute beginners are very welcome as are people with advanced knowledge. The course will be interactively tailored to place emphasis on aspects needed. I am very flexible and will concentrate on gaps in individual knowledge.

This two day course can be one to one, with a group, two days in a row, or each day in isolation. Easily tailored to you. All I need to know is whether you are interested in Black and White or Colour Photography, or both of course! I assume in 2025 you have a Digital Camera - I have had digital Cameras for 30 years now - but I also have 40 years experience of Film and Wet Darkrooms. I learnt in the Film era. I refer you to my Website – www.portraitsbyyounger.com.

Day One - Taking Photos:
We meet up at your place of choice, you lead the way and as soon as you spot a photo we take it together on your camera considering such things as F-Stop, Shutter Speed, ISO/ASA, Focus.
I might ask you to take it 12 times – each time with a different exposure. I, at all stages, place emphasis on optimising the negative (file) - to ease Printing. To ensure your vision. I will ask you to take certain photographs as well – to assist you in understanding the technical side - correct exposure, the Grey Scale etc ... and what effect under and over exposure has. And how you can use that to create the Perfect Print. Confidence!
We discuss all aspects of Cameras and taking photos … keeping it nice and simple.  I answer any query you have. I do not offer opinion as to what you place in your viewfinder, unless specifically asked. I know from years of taking photos all over the world with others that you have your own eye … and I merely want to encourage / inspire you to trap it in a file in order to produce a lovely print. Confidence to have your inspiration on file … and to create the Best Print possible.

Day Two: Editing / Printing:
We meet at my premises. We review Day one and solve any pressing questions / doubts. We load all photos taken on Day One onto my computer (the Original Files) in order to begin Editing and Printing. And any other photo you have brought with you. We create an Optimal Screen Version from the Original Files. We then create the Print Version from the Screen Version – in this case for my Printer. We then Print two photos of your choice. We discuss Printers, Papers and Inks and how you might create your own Print Room.

A Screen Version is created from the Original File(s). If we made numerous exposures we choose the optimum file and build the picture up square centimetre by square centimetre with Brightness, Contrast, Levels and other editing features / tools. These are not Digital Manipulation tools, merely optimising all aspects of the frame you have taken. Thus you are learning editing using a digital package … on your own photo. Hands on. We might also Edit a photo I asked you to take to illustrate certain points or techniques.

You will now have a few Screen photos optimised. We choose two of them and we print them as they are and then edit them into the Print Version. We use the Editing Software (ie the same techniques) and we go through the process of adjusting the Screen Version to create a perfect Print Version for the Inks, Paper, ICC Profiles and Printer I have. Again, we build up the photo centimetre by centimetre.
We choose the Final Print Size and Print Software / Printer Software Parameters. We record all processes and you take away my Print Form (I make one for every photo) detailing the Print process and interim prints leading to the Final Print.

I provide you with the details of the firms I use for Paper, Ink, ICC profiles etc. They have always looked after me immediately when I have contacted them with a query. They have provided Sample Paper for you. I highly recommend them … but you will have many choices for supplies.

Attending this course enables you to go through the photographic process of Taking a photo optimally to allow Editing and Printing of an Exhibition Print.

After the course – we follow up to discuss aspects of the course and keep in touch.
